The Preiss Company Charitable Donations Top $1.5 Million Giving Back Is a “Natural” in Student Housing Industry

RALEIGH, N.C., October 7, 2014— Officials of The Preiss Company, the nation’s fourth largest privately held student housing owner, today announced that with a $20,000 contribution to Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the company’s charitable donations crossed the $1.5 million threshold over the past 10 years.

“Our company has always had a commitment to be good citizens,” said Donna Preiss, company founder and CEO. “It’s good for our communities, it sets a great example for our students and associates, and it simply is the right thing to do.”

Since its founding 27 years ago, Preiss has sponsored some 50 charities. Current major company support includes such organizations as The NCSU Annual scholarship fund, the SPCA, The Red Cross, Toys for Tots and the American Heart Association. The Preiss Company’s community relations strategy focuses on contributing to education, community development and health initiatives.

“While our students have always been social activists, be it on campus or in the local community, we have noticed a definite trend of increased participation over the past five years,” she said. “As part of our social calendar at our properties, we encourage and help organize fund raisers and volunteer efforts that our student residents support.

“One of my favorites this year is a project our University Village property is doing in conjunction with Slippery Rock University. Our residents asked us to create a partnership with the bookstore to support two great programs—Military Appreciation and Breast Cancer Awareness. We wholehearted agreed and donated the total cost for logo-supporting tee shirts which the bookstore is selling to raise funds for charity. The word is out that students will wear the shirts to the October 4 football game. It’s been a hit at the bookstore, and it’s a great feeling knowing that students both want the shirts and to support these great causes. Joining forces with our student/residents is a natural,” Preiss noted.

“While it is virtually impossible to track all the dollars raised and the volunteer hours given, we are confident that our 18,000 student residents annually raise more than $425,000 and provide nearly 30,000 volunteer hours,” Preiss added. “These efforts make being in the student housing industry all the more rewarding.”
